Cordero Elected Board President
Walter Voted as the Commission’s Vice President

July 2, 2007

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has elected Commissioner Mario Cordero, a local attorney, as the board's president for a one-year term beginning July 2, 2007.

The commissioners also selected Dr. Mike Walter as the vice president of the five-member Port governing board. Doris Topsy-Elvord was elected as the commission's secretary. James C. Hankla, the outgoing president, was chosen as the assistant secretary. The other board member is John Hancock, whose final term on the commission ends this summer.

As the new board president, Cordero will preside over the commission's weekly board meetings, make committee appointments and act as chief spokesperson for the Port of Long Beach.

“As our Green Port Policy mandates, trade growth runs parallel to being an environmental steward, ” Cordero said at Monday’s (July 2) board meeting. “[Our] challenge is not only to be a leader, but an innovator.”

Cordero, a staff counsel for Safeco Insurance, was appointed to a six-year term on the commission in 2003. He also teaches political science at Long Beach City College. He previously served as vice chair of the city-commissioned Ethics Review Task Force, which developed a code of ethics for city employees, as well as elected and appointed city officials.

Walter, assistant to the president for community relations at California State University, Long Beach, and former dean of its College of Business Administration, was appointed to the commission in 2005.

Topsy-Elvord, a former Long Beach city councilwoman, was appointed to the commission in 2003 to fill an unexpired term. Hankla, a former Long Beach city manager, was appointed to the board in 2003. Hancock, president of the Bancap Investment Group, has been a commissioner since 1995.
